I appreciate you sharing this information and I will definitely be less stressed now about buying new curtains for my Living room. I get anxiety when I go to look and usually buy something that did not work at all for my space! Everything you talked about I have done. Buying curtains is very confusing and I hate trying to do it alone. Finding the style, weight, measurements. Rods, if you need a sheer, if you want the rod to show, how many panels you need ……
Thanks. I am watching again.
I love farm houses. Simple , cozy, natural wood look and not industrial, commercialized.
Excellent tips, thank you
Puddling looks sloppy to me.
With hot air heat the vents are almost always are under windows. Drapes to the floor trap air.
No curtains should touch the floor in my house. Yuk. Half an inch off the floor.
I"M NEUTRAL, I USE LINEN NAPKINS FOR VALENCES, KING SIZE SHEETS FOR LARGE PATIO DOOR CEILING TO FLOOR
Each to their own taste
How nice to have a handy husband to help implement all of your decorating ideas. As a trained interior designer with lots of experience in window covering design, all I’m lacking is a handyman. Lost my handy husband a year ago. I’m having to do a lot that he did for me on my own now. Yes, sucks to lose my husband, but it’s quite gratifying to learn I’m capable of doing things I never expected to be doing now at 67 years old.
With winter approaching, I’ll have about 5-6 months of snow, time to do indoor projects. I just might get some draperies made. I certainly have the materials for them. You’ve inspired me to get going on some of my own interiors decorating DIY projects. Thanks for sharing!
One thing I used to ask my clients when they couldn’t decide which fabric they prefer: do they want the WOW! affect in the room or do they want the Oooooooohhhhhh effect. Curtains can really set the mood, IE make a difference in the atmosphere, in their room, so they need to decide how they want to feel when they’re in a room. This really helped people make their fabric selections when I was helping them design their home. BTW, I absolutely LOVE the fabric you used in your nook.
Oh, 1 tip I remembered when I went into another room after watching your video. That is, make sure the rod is the correct width. I’m sure you understand why, so I’ll leave it to you to share that in another video.
Neutral look is nice…
Thank you so much for this video. I learned a lot. I haven’t bought new curtains in a good while.
most hoses in UK have their radiators installed under windows )this is done by the builders as standard) so yes curtains full length I agree look great. But as to winter draw the curtains and your heat trapped behind therefore a COLD ROOM so not suitable for all even if you really want them as the alternatiove in Uk is to re-site all radiators in ones home as that is a very expensive idea
Thanks, this was very so helpful. I made many of the mistakes you mentioned the first time I decorated my living room 14 years ago but we are getting new lighter-colored furniture so I am getting a second chance! I have a pair of windows that flank my fireplace and the media niche above it, I was wondering what you recommend as far as the curtain rod placement outside the window well itself in inches. Maybe add 8 -10 inches or so if I have them open from the center of each window? Conversely, I could add those inches to the right for the right-sided window and to the left for the left-sided window. to define the room a little since we have an open-concept living/breakfast/kitchen area. I am so not good at this!
I have a question about using premade curtain panels from like Ikea. What if I need more than one panel per side because my window is large. Do you just sew them together somehow? I would be opening and closing the curtains daily. Great video!
Love lot your ideas
This really helped me. Thanks.
If I want the pattern to be visible, should I go for less fabric? I have a thick vintage Scandinavian cotton fabric. I want the bold colorful pattern to be a feature. I worry that if the fabric gathers too much, the pattern won’t show up, and I’ll only see the colors that make up the pattern. Thoughts?
No puddling sucks! Draps are dirty all the time and makes it harder to open and close. Your example of "too short" curtains, there was a desk in front of the window, the curtain is the right length in order to close the curtain at night any longer would be a hassle. Personally, I think the large gap between the top of the window and curtain rod actually looks cheap because larger windows are more expensive. The picture you showed as the don’t actually looks far more elegant and expensive that the cheap hang the rod higher to hide that fact we have small window play. Plus, your example of hang the curtain high are actual floor to ceiling windows, NOT hide the fact they are NOT large windows.
I have now watched 3 of these videos and all 3 of you say different things about curtain length. I think to each his own. Different things look better in different types of homes. Your home and the homes in your photo are indeed very beautiful but not so realistic for most of us. I live in a nice standard ranch style one level home. No vaulted ceilings, and no real room for crown molding. While this was a good video maybe do a video for folks like the rest of us who don’t have a big home with vaulted ceilings. That would help us figure out how to make our spaces look better
Personally I don’t like curtains as they are dust magnets. I much prefer Roman blinds or shutters. They make your rooms look much bigger.

Is this the same for kitchen windows should they be hung higher up near the ceiling?
I think you should use one rod in that living room and also train those curtains and not let the lower flare out.
Curtains make a home
some people
don’t hang Curtains ?? There house looks so empty
Thanks for this. It gave me, a 68-year-old straight man flying solo, the confidence to do the windows in my new condo. They came out great!
What about decorative molding windows. What is a perfect way to hang curtains with them?
Who outside the ppl living in the home. See your curtains closed? I have never closed my curtains with guest.
Stop doing these is a good start.
PENNY’S HAS GOOD QUALITY CURTAINS & DRAPERIES
my dog likes to pull down curtains.
Take the seam out to add length at the bottom
My dog would get stuck in them
I personally do not like the curtains on the floor or puddling on floor.
Nobody ever addresses what to do when you have baseboard heaters. I have a HUGE triple window in my living room and I don’t know what to do with it
Don’t like her idea
Most of my curtains are not so much IKEA as IKEA green – some of you may remember when leaf green was IKEAs signature colour. I am forever making curtains from thrifted fabric – use them for a while, then donate them to the hospital charity shop. Win-win.
No black walls…no
Thanks dearest for sharing you gain a subscriber from kenya
I disagree, curtains grazing the floor with cats and dogs just doesn’t work
I think the curtains can look funny when hung too high above the window.
Technically curtains are short like cafe style. Draperies are long usually to the floor.
What do I do w a slanted wall above the window .? Do I start the rod at the lowest point of the slant
Make a colour chart with the names of the color ….. most people don’t even know what the name of the color is
Hello! Love the tips, anyway, I am thinking of curtains for our 4br house, I am just wondering if it looks bad from the outside if you have different shades of curtains on some parts of the house. I love the neutral colors for the living and our bedroom but I have 2 boys and in love with navy blues and other dark colors. What are your thoughts on it?
I must be weird, but I really don’t think curtains from almost floor to ceiling look attractive at all. I prefer the way we always had them: rod is attached to the window molding and the curtainis maybe a foot or so below the window sill. I don’t understand how those super long curtains look attractive unless you live in a mansion or something. I’m getting ready to put curtains up in my new house. Even after watching this, I decided to just put white sheers in my bedroom that are a bit higher than the window molding (as a compromise – lol) and maybe a foot below the sill. Ok call them awful – I have thick skin.
These days, curtains need to be off the floor to allow a Roomba to sweep without getting tangled up.
I am indecisive about what colour curtain to choose for my light gray kitchen and floor with dark brown breakfast bar, I was thinking olive coloured curtains, do you think this colour suits my kitchen please ?
Can you come up with an idea from not getting the dogs from peeing on it?
Not advisable if you have cat & dog. Tbh.
